How VCI Works
VCI is the generic term for “volatile corrosion inhibitor,” “vapor corrosion inhibitor,” or “Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor,” a revolutionary technology that simplifies corrosion protection and is ideal for keeping enclosed void spaces (e.g., packages, equipment internals, or structural metal cavities) rust-free.  We have trademarked our Cortec® brand of VCIs under the name VpCI® to help ensure our customers are getting the premium VCI products that are trusted globally.
VCI technology works to create a protective environment within each package or enclosure where it is applied. VCIs inside liquids, powders, or packaging materials travel through the air to form an invisible protective shield on metal surfaces in the enclosed space. This VCI shield does not alter metal properties. Instead, it blocks the ability of oxygen, moisture, and other corrosive elements to attack the metal surface and make it rust. After the metal part is taken out of the VCI packaging or enclosed space, the VCIs float away, and the metal components, machinery, or products are ready for immediate use, no cleaning or degreasing required.

Corrosion is a constant, indiscriminate, and costly enemy of metal, especially when packaged for storage and transportation. Traditional anti-corrosion methods are messy, costly, and can be hazardous to personnel and the environment. Too often they are ineffective. Cortec’s Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI®) technology represents a breakthrough solution in corrosion prevention. Our VpCI® products protect metals with a chemically adsorbed molecular layer that provides multimetal corrosion protection. The coverage is complete – all surfaces, crevices, cavities, and other inaccessible void areas receive total protection. The VpCI® barrier is self-replenishing, even for packaging that’s repeatedly opened, and typically protects for up to 24 months.
Many types of corrosion prevention measures have been adopted over the years by the military. Now, new strategies are continually being developed and evaluated for effective corrosion control. Loss due to corrosion has become a major priority for militaries. VpCI ® emitting systems include cups, foams, and pouches that are easy to install inside everything from electronics packages to non-ventilated electrical control cabinets and junction boxes in operation. These emit- ting systems release Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors into the enclosed space. The vapor deposits on metal surfaces and forms a non-conductive molecular layer that helps reduce corrosion in the enclosure and does not interfere with electrical, optical, or mechanical sur- face properties.
The total economic loss from corrosion in a metal producing plant can approach a staggering 5%. This huge loss comes from products that must be sold as a lower grade or must be re-pickled, reprocessed, or scrapped due to corrosive attack while in the plant, leading to lost production capacity. The high cost of corrosion also includes rust claims and freight costs for returned goods.
